Neighborhood News: Student artwork at Southold Free Library

As I write this, it is so beautiful out! I hope you find time to enjoy the warmer weather.

Starting with birthdays, I have but one — albeit a special one. Happy birthday to our youngest child, Caroline Koslosky, who turns 11 on April 21.

Jill Franke was just inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa Zeta Nu chapter. She also achieved a 4.0 in her paralegal studies. Congratulations, Jill!

The Mixed Nuts Relay for Life team will hold its annual pre-Easter Bake Sale on Saturday, April 19, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Southold IGA. No need to bake this Easter; simply come and purchase your Easter desserts from the team and help a good cause at the same time. All proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society.

The Music Boosters’ annual Mother’s Day plant sale is back! All proceeds from this fundraiser directly benefit the music and drama programs at Southold Schools. Choices include a variety of potted flowering plants, flats of begonias, accent plants and hanging baskets — all reasonably priced! Order forms will be sent out with elementary school students on April 21 and are available on the music department’s web page: http://www.myschoolpages.com/schools/southold/webpages/khimmelmann/musicboosters.cfm. Orders are due by Friday, April 25 and can be mailed, turned in to any Southold music teacher or emailed to [email protected]. Plants must be picked up at the elementary school Saturday, May 10, between 10 and 11:30 a.m. For more information, call Alice, 765-9387, or email [email protected].

An amazing artwork exhibit is on display at Southold Free Library through April. Southold High School students, under the guidance of instructor Dan Gosnell, have created impressive multimedia pieces that are spread throughout both the main and second levels. Stop by to enjoy soon! Remember, too, that the poetry gallery is on display this month in the community room — another must-see, and read.

An Oscar Party Salute to Broadway musical revue show will be held at the Soundview Restaurant Sunday, May 4, at 2 p.m. to benefit Birthright in Southold. The salute will feature Oscar-winning songs from the 1930s to 1970s. The cost for a complete dinner and the show is $30 including tip. Advance reservations only; contact Mary Pedersen at 765-9243 or 516-607-4504.

Southold Historical Society’s annual art auction is set for Saturday, April 26, at Castello di Borghese Vineyard. The preview begins at 6 p.m. and the auction starts at 7. Art by a number of important local painters, photographers, and artisans — past and present — will be on the auction block. Admission is $10, including wine and hors d’oeuvres. To see the works in advance, visit southoldhistoricalsociety.org and click the auction link on the far left.

Students of the month have been announced. In the middle school they are Katherine Jarvis, art; Marie Mullen, English; Emiliann Palermo, Spanish; Kai Obinata, science; Justin Tobin, home and career skills; Samantha Dunne, physical education; and Ashley Lang, classroom participation. At the high school we have Katie Connolly, art; Robert Anderson, business; Aidan Toy, NJROTC; Michael Schade, Spanish; Rafael Campos, ESL; and Cassidy Mignone, culinary arts. Random Act of Kindness recognition went to Tatiana Amador. Congratulations one and all!

My next deadline is April 27 at 10 a.m. Please share your news with me. Remember to take a moment to smell the air outside and smile. You’ll be surprised at how much lighter you’ll feel.
