$35K solution to sewer stench on Greenport agenda

Foul odors coming from Greenport’s sewage treatment plant may cost up to $35,000 to fix, according to village officials. The Village Board is set to discuss the stinky situation during its work session at 6 p.m. this evening. 

For the past couple of months, the village has received several complaints about sewage smells coming from the direction of the Moores Lane plant when the wind blows out of the northwest, according to the board’s agenda.

During one inspection, village workers detected a “strong odor” coming from the facility’s un-aerated sludge holding tank, which is believed to be the source of the stench.

The solution is to aerate the tank to allow in more air in order to eliminate the smell, according to Sewer Department supervisor Ray Dunbar’s monthly report, which is attached to the work session agenda.

The total cost of the project, including installation, is estimated to cost between $30,000 and $35,000.

“Since odors are offensive and will probably reoccur they should be eliminated,” Mr. Dunbar’s report stated. “It is this department’s recommendation that an aeration system be installed.”

The Village Board is expected to discuss the project in more detail during tonight’s work session at 6 p.m. at the Third Street Fire Station.
