A man allegedly banged on doors with a hammer before “advancing” towards a responding police officer at a residence in Cutchogue Saturday morning, according to a Southold police statement.

The man eventually put down his “weapon,” a large barbecue fork, was arrested, and is now facing a felony weapons charge.

Police received a call about 9:30 a.m. of a man wielding a hammer and banging on doors at the property on Cox Lane, according to the statement. A cop got to the scene and talked to the man — 52-year-old Robert Sullivan of Cutchogue — who was carrying the fork.

Mr. Sullivan allegedly advanced on the officer despite “numerous” orders to drop the fork. He eventually did and was taken into custody. Police said they found he was carrying heroin, hypodermic needles and marijuana.

He was charged with felony criminal possession of a weapon, misdemeanor menacing, criminal possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation, police said. He was taken to police headquarters and held for arraignment.

Mr. Sullivan’s arrest comes little over a month after he was arrested on Main Road in Southold for allegedly driving while impaired by drugs, police said. That case is still pending.
