Inspired by The Suffolk Times’ front cover this week, which featured a group photo of more than 100 people at Mitchell Park in Greenport, the Suffolk County Historical Society dug up a similar Greenport group photo more than 100 years old.

The image shows residents of Greenport circa 1890 at the Presbyterian Church in Greenport. Many are holding American flags and it appears to be a parade or celebration.

The Historical Society has a running feature for a photo of the week, created by librarian Wendy Polhemus-Annibell. To subsrcibe, email [email protected].

The Suffolk Times set up an open photo shoot for anyone in Greenport who wished to take part last Sunday. The photo ran on the cover of this week’s issue, dubbed “The Greenport Issue.” Greenport was the winning hamlet in northforker.com’s Game of Hamlets, which set up a March Madness style bracket to determine which hamlet peopled liked the best.

The Suffolk County Historical Society is based in Riverhead. For more information, click here.
