Southold blotter: Sign damaged by pickup truck’s runaway tire

A Southold business’ sign was damaged last Sunday when the tire of a passing truck fell off the vehicle and smashed into the sign, police said.

The 1994 Ford pickup truck was headed west on Route 48 about 6:10 p.m. when the front left wheel of the car came off. The tire rolled across the roadway and hit the sign, damaging it, police said.

The driver of the truck — Rony Alvizures of Greenport — was later issued a ticket for unlicensed driving, police said.

• A Shirley man who passed a stopped school bus while students were getting on board in Cutchogue last Thursday was caught driving with a suspended license, police said.

An officer on patrol noticed the vehicle — driven by 51-year-old Didi Quinones — allegedly drive east on Route 48 about 8:15 a.m., despite the stopped bus’ flashing red lights warning drivers to stop. He was pulled over, and police found his license had been suspended for failing to answer a summons, according to the report.

Mr. Quinones was arrested and charged with aggravated unlicensed driving and two traffic tickets. He was released on $100 bail, police said.

• Edgar Rolando Reyez, 21, of Riverhead was arrested for driving with a suspended licensed and marijuana possession after he was allegedly caught speeding in Mattituck Saturday, according to a police report.

Mr. Reyez was driving west on Sound Avenue about 10:30 a.m. when he was pulled over. Police said they found his license had been suspended and that there was a small plastic bag “containing a green leaf-like substance” on the floor of the front passenger seat, according to the report.

The substance later tested positive for marijuana, police said.

The Riverhead man was charged with aggravated unlicensed driving and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation. He was held at police headquarters until he could make bail.

• An East Marion woman called police last Friday morning to tell them that someone visiting her neighbor had blocked off the driveway the two properties share.

Police said the vehicle was moved once its owner realized it was in the way.

• Someone damaged the dead bolt lock of a storage door at a Greenport deli last Sunday, police said. The lock still works and no arrests were made.
