William Henry Manners, 96, passed away May 1, 2014 at his home in Greenport.

Born in Wertsville, N.J. Sept. 3, 1917 to VanDyke Manners and Alice Kane, Mr. Manners was raised on a farm. William left the farm after graduating from Flemington High School in 1934 and attended Parks Air College in St. Louis, Mo.

After graduating and being unable to find a job in United States because of the Depression, he went to Central America, where he flew crop dusters over bananas. After returning from Central America, he worked for Pan American Airlines for 36 years, where he distinguished himself as a great mechanic, leader and teacher as the director of maintenance training. During his career he lived in New Hyde Park and later retired to Greenport

William had a great love of life and an adventurous spirit. During retirement he traveled extensively with his wife of 74 years. They spent many fun-filled winters in Florida in their recreational vehicle. He rode a motorcycle, flew remote control airplanes, and was a ham radio operator. William loved the North Fork and its beauty. He learned to catch lobsters and scalloped. Returning to his farming roots, he created a huge garden and orchard in his backyard.

William was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hyde Park, where he served as president. He was also a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Greenport.

William was predeceased by his son Ralph William Manners; and his brothers Kenneth and Robert Manners. He is survived by his wife, Thelma Manners of Greenport; his daughter, Ann Palm of Fairfield, Conn.; and his son Roy and his wife Carol Manners, of New Hyde Park. Five grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive William.

The family received visitors May 4 at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.  A funeral service was held May 5 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. Private cremation followed.
