In a 4-2 vote Tuesday night, Southold Town Board members appointed Mattituck lawyer Stephen Kiely as assistant town attorney.

Council members Bill Ruland and Louisa Evans voted against the hire but didn’t explain why.

Mr. Kiely, who most recently served as a senior deputy in the Suffolk County Clerk’s office, was hired at a starting rate of $95,000. He replaces Jennifer Andaloro, who vacated the position earlier this year.

Supervisor Scott Russell said Mr. Kiely stood out over the “many” applicants for the job.

Before working for Suffolk County, Mr. Kiely served as assistant town attorney in Brookhaven and Southampton towns and as assistant district attorney in the Columbia County district attorney’s office in Hudson, N.Y.

In March 2013, he was screened by the GOP as a potential candidate in a special election for the 2nd District seat in the New York State Assembly. That seat later went to fellow Mattituck attorney Anthony Palumbo.

Mr. Kiely is scheduled to start at Town Hall May 30.

His contract expires Dec. 31, according to the resolution.
