Scam-attempt phone calls spark police investigation in Greenport

Southold Town police are looking into reports of a phone scammer or scammers targeting Greenport Village residents, according to police chief Martin Flatley.

The investigation began after officers received several complaints Tuesday, mostly from business owners, reporting similar stories in which a caller identified him or herself as a representative of a utility company and demanded payment.

Pay, the caller threatened, or the customers utility would be shut off, Mr. Flatley said.

It is not believed that anyone has remitted any money to this caller, he said.

Village officials said Tuesday afternoon that Greenport power plant and Village Hall employees have made no such calls to businesses or residents.

If anyone is concerned about their village electric accounts after receiving a phony phone call, they advise calling the village office directly at 477-0248 for clarification.
