State shuts down BBQ Bill’s in Greenport for unpaid taxes
State tax officials shut down a Greenport Village barbecue spot Thursday for failing to pay thousands of dollars in state sales taxes, according to the state Department of Taxation and Finance.
According to the online state tax warrant system, at least a dozen tax liens have been filed against BBQ Bill’s on Front Street, which is listed as being owned by DCSH Restaurant Inc. since 2008.
Eight warrants dating back to 2011 — totaling over $50,500 — are still listed by the state as open, including a recent warrant for $7,000 that was filed on May 7.
It was not immediately clear how much, exactly, the restaurant would need to pay the state in order to reopen.
The restaurant, known for its pulled-meat sandwiches, St. Louis baby back ribs and smoked wings, is located in the heart of the business district with an upstairs view of Greenport harbor in the back.
Calls to BBQ Bill’s went unanswered Thursday afternoon.
