Although foul odors exuding from the Moores Lane sewage treatment plant have recently subsided,  the Greenport Village Board is moving forward with a $35,000 plan to fix the stinky situation.

During Monday night’s work session, village administrator Paul Pallas said there haven’t been any new reports of smells coming from the direction of the plant when the wind blows out of the northwest. However, Mr. Pallas said the stench has been intermittent for years and needs to be fixed.

About three months ago, residents of West Street began complaining about sewage smells. During one inspection, village workers detected a “strong odor” coming from the facility’s sludge holding tank, which was confirmed to be the source of the stench.

To solve the problem, sewer department supervisor Ray Dunbar created a plan to aerate the tank to allow in more air. Under the proposal, “blowers,” which would act like fans, would be installed in the tank and run year-round to eliminate the smell.

The equipment is estimated to cost $14,000 and installation another $15,000 to $20,000, officials said.

The village has now put the project out to bid, officials said.
