Cops: Greenport man resisted arrest over trespassing incident

A 52-year-old man who was being arrested Sunday in Greenport for criminal trespassing resisted officers and had to be restrained, Southold Town police said.

Greenport resident Jose Antonio Chavez was caught on Front Street about 5:30 p.m. in connection with a previous trespassing incident, according to a police statement. While he was being placed under arrest, Mr. Chavez resisted, police said. He was eventually subdued and taken to police headquarters.

Mr. Chavez was charged with misdemeanor resisting arrest and criminal trespassing, police said.

Another Greenport man — 38-year-old Oliver Fernandez — was also arrested on a trespassing charge at the same time as Mr. Chavez, but did not resist police, the statement said. He was charged with misdemeanor criminal trespassing and released on bail.
