Greenport: Oyster company’s dock plans up for hearing — again

The Greenport Village Board is holding another public hearing tonight, Monday, on a matter trustees already voted on last year that would allow a 140-foot dock built.

Last month, the board was criticized for scheduling the hearing regarding a wetlands permit application submitted by a local oyster farmer after a clerical error made by the village slowed the company’s plans.

That was after a somewhat controversial public hearing on the application in November, when the board approved Widows Hole Oyster Company’s proposal to build the dock near the bay side of the company’s Flint Street property — just south of the North Ferry — to store some of his equipment.

However, a two-word typo in November’s legal ad notifying the public of the hearing misstated the size of the dock, which could pose legal repercussions in the future, Mayor David Nyce said last month.

The board’s decision to re-notice the hearing was also not without controversy.

Oyster company owners and applicants Michael and Isabel Osinski, who are now suing the village over the last-minute change and failure to receive his building permit, were joined by several members of the community to protest the need for tonight’s hearing.

The board is expected to approve the corrected wetlands permit application immediately following tonight public hearing, which is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Third Street fire station. Read the full agenda below:
