Interactive maps of Southold Town roads may soon be available to the public online.

John Sepenoski, of the town’s information systems department, told the board during Tuesday morning’s work session that the new tool could be made available as soon as the board approves it.

The first three maps are designed to answer frequently asked questions as well as to help town employees look up information more quickly, Mr. Sepenoski said.

One map would show public trails in Southold Town. It would provide addresses of the preserves, information on parking and ability to map out the trails.

Another map is designed to clarify what roads are private or maintained by the town, county or state.

The last one is a Southold Town tax map for the public to view the types of land use on a particular parcel as well as its acreage. However, users must know the tax map number to access the information on the property.

In the future the hope is to design a more comprehensive interactive zoning map that would not require a tax map number and would outline different types of zoning in each hamlet in more detail, he said.

The map will be available to the public free online on the town’s homepage once the town’s attorney reviews the disclaimers.
