Village Board schedules water quality hearings for July
The Greenport Village Board is gearing up to host three separate public hearings to discuss federal and state mandates aimed at improving water quality through a program commonly known as MS4.
During its work session Monday, the agreed to hold the hearings in July.
No formal dates have been set.
The first hearing will pertain to Greenport’s MS4 report from this year. The hearing is required annually as a part of federal and state legislation.
The two other hearings deal with adding MS4 regulations and enforcement guidelines into the village code, as requested by the state and federal government. The language of the code was not provided during the village’s public work session Monday evening.
Under orders from both the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and state Department of Conservation, the village and other local governments must develop and implement a stormwater management program (SWMP) to reduce pollution in area waterways. With that, the village must require developers to submit more stringent pollution prevention plans, village officials said.
