Cops: Greenport man breaks into house looking for a smoke

A Greenport man got a warning from police last week after he broke into his neighbor’s kitchen looking for a cigarette, Southold Town police said.

The 48-year-old went uninvited into his neighbor’s kitchen around 6:15 p.m. last Wednesday and was caught by the homeowner while he was rummaging through an ashtray looking for a used cigarette, police said.

The homeowner called the cops and when officers arrived the man was told he can’t walk into people’s houses without permission and would be arrested for trespassing if it happens again, police said.
