Cops: Southold man fled scene of crash in Greenport

A 33-year-old Southold man was arrested Wednesday, July 2, in Greenport on several charges, including driving drunk, after he fled the scene of an accident, police said.

After striking a fire hydrant on Webb Street around 1 p.m., Roberto Bachez-Reyes left his vehicle and ran off into the woods, but was quickly nabbed on Second Street by officers called to the scene, police said.

A search of the car turned up open bottles of Heineken beer in the center console, police.

Mr. Bachez-Reyes was charged with aggravated DWI, Leaving the Scene of Accident, drinking in a motor vehicle on a highway and several other traffic infractions, police said.

He was taken to police headquarters awaiting morning arraignment.
