Cops: Woman found asleep at the wheel, charged with DWI

A 21-year-old Southold woman was arrested for driving drunk yesterday after she was found passed out at the wheel on Young’s Avenue in Southold, according to police.

Around 7:08 p.m. officers responded a report of a driver asleep in a vehicle. Police reported that when the responding officer was able to wake the woman, Shannon Voelkel, she attempted to start the vehicle.

The officer stopped her from turning on the car and according to police, Ms. Voelkel was found to be intoxicated after failing several sobriety tests.

She was arrested and now faces a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated, police said.

Ms. Voelkel was transported to police headquarters, processed and held overnight pending arraignment.
