Summer is the time to catch up with friends, old and new. Whether at a local winery, at the post office or getting a cup of coffee at Handy Pantry, the season opens up opportunities to reconnect with our neighbors.

Safe and sound after a voyage on the deep blue sea, Mary Grace Finora told me that her husband and sons are all back on land. James Finora’s adventures are not quite over, however. A student at Fordham University, he is spending some time studying in Prague. Sounds like there will be many more pages in this next chapter. Have fun, James!

What a beautiful day for a wedding! Last Saturday, Diana ( Reilly) and Nick Van Vliet exchanged wedding vows surrounded by friends and family. May the sun always shine on your lives together!

Mark Gaynor moved from Mattituck last fall to Aspetuck Village in Shelton, Conn., to be closer to his daughter Missy. He and his wife, Annie, still keep abreast of all happenings in Mattituck and environs by continuing their Suffolk Times subscription. Mark recently emailed an update: Since their arrival in Connecticut, the family has grown, with two more great-grandchildren, both boys, in addition to 3-year-old great-granddaughter Maeve, who lives in Iowa City, Iowa. Annie and Mark are looking forward to their 60th wedding anniversary in October.

The annual Southold Mothers’ Club auction will take place Thursday, Aug. 7, from 7 to 10 p.m. at Macari Vineyards in Mattituck. Join them for light fare, a chinese auction and a special door prize. Admission is $10; cash wine bar. For additional information, contact [email protected].

Watching grandmothers pushing their grandchildren in strollers always brings a smile to my face. Last week I spoke with a very happy Adrienne Rehm as she pushed grandson Kevin Maida on a morning walk. A very special birthday wish to Kevin, who will celebrate his first birthday Aug. 1.

Others celebrating birthdays during the next two weeks include Karen Diffley, Tyler Cande, Christopher Busch and Jon Bressler. Enjoy!

Don’t forget to check out the farmers market at Mattituck Florist, which runs every Friday from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. through Oct. 31.

As Kylie Freudenberg counts the days until her departure for college in Washington, D.C., her sister Katie has just returned from London with her Villanova friends. Welcome home, Katie, and best of luck, Kylie!

CAST’s Aug. 2 food drive has been canceled. If you’d still like to help stock its shelves, donation bins for non-perishables are in place at King Kullen in Cutchogue and the IGAs in Southold and Greenport. Gift cards or money are also welcome at the CAST office, 311 Front St., Greenport or by mail to P.O. Box 159, Greenport, NY 11944.

My next column deadline is Aug. 10. Call or email so I can write about your summer escapades.
