Three cheers for the red, white and blue! The Fourth of July weekend is upon us! The calendar fills up so quickly at this time of year that doing the column every two weeks makes it impossible to keep up. Keep the emails coming and I’ll try to get your news printed in a timely manner.

Superintendent James McKenna was honored last week at a retirement party at Giorgio’s. The guests included former superintendents Roger Burns, Lee Ellwood and Dwayne Adsitt; current and former school board members and teachers; community members; and family and friends — all gathered for an evening of speeches and congratulations. Leah Sullivan (MHS Class of 1992), an aide to Congressman Tim Bishop, presented Mr. McKenna with a flag that had flown over the U.S. Capitol building; John Galla from Assemblyman Anthony Palumbo’s office offered congratulations; and the Mattituck-Cutchogue Teachers Association presented a painting created by former art teacher Lee Harned. Special thanks to Beds and Borders for the beautiful centerpieces, Dave and Sharon Smith and their band for the beautiful music and maître d’ Nick and the Giorgio’s staff for a beautiful evening.

The Mattituck Fire Department is looking for any photos taken during the tragic June 20 fire at the Liberty Data Systems building on Main Road. Happy birthday will be sung this week to Edward Quintieri, Andrew Ennis, Brette Rosen, Chris Papadopoulos, Christopher Rehm, Liza Coppola, Asa Mikelbank, Meaghan Burke, Anne Gilvarry, Danielle Young, Tim Timpone and Chelsea Scoggin.

Teaching is a career that remains with you long after you’ve left the classroom. Thanks and congratulations to retiring teachers Tom Brennan, Barbara Abbott, Sue Boyle, Gail Angel and Nancy Krakowka. May you carry the memories of all you’ve done for our children with you into life’s next chapter.

Just a reminder: There will be one big fundraiser this summer to help offset costs for students traveling to Spain next spring. The annual yard sale is Saturday, July 12, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Mattituck High School. Anyone with items to donate for the sale can drop them off at the school at 8 a.m.
