Southold News: Another round of happy birthdays

Ever wonder why I put birthdays first? It’s simple. To me, birthdays are a celebration of your life and how I am happy you were born and in my life. So let’s celebrate life! Belated birthday wishes to Jaime Engles, who turned 11 July 14. Yao Yao Reilly blows out candles on July 26. Sue Boivin and Kaitlyn Kettenbeil celebrate birthdays on the 29th. Melanie Grigonis and Jonathan Baumann blow out candles on the 30th. Happy birthday to Judi Fouchet on Aug. 1 and, finally — a BIG O birthday — happy birthday to Kate Panetta on Aug. 6.

Happy 20th anniversary to my husband Jim, on Aug. 6. Also celebrating that day are Deanna and Brian Walker.

Saturday, July 26, is a busy day in town. The Presbyterian women will hold a barn sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. rain or shine offering jewelry, furniture, fishing rods and reels and more. Proceeds go to local charities. The barn is behind Bank of America on Wells Avenue.

The Greenport and Southold Rotary Lobster Fest runs from 5 to 8 p.m. the same day at Founders Landing in Southold. Adult tickets are $40 in advance; $45 at the door. Meals for the 12-and-under crowd are $7, with a choice of hamburger or hot dog. Treat yourself to a delicious lobster or steak dinner with local corn and watermelon and enjoy continuous live music until 9:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased from Hampton Jitney, Capital One Bank and Bridgehampton National Bank, Greenport; Ameriprise Financial and Bridgehampton National Bank, Southold; Suffolk County National Bank, Cutchogue; and Bridgehampton National Bank in Cutchogue and Mattituck, or call 276-1993, 765-5100 or 298-5868.

Speaking of ELIH, its summer gala Saturday, Aug. 9, at the House of Seven Gables in Orient comes with views of Bug Light and Latham’s Farm, a farm-to-table meal and a performance by Perlman Music Program alumni and a cappella group Voices Only from TV’s “America’s Got Talent.” Reserve tickets online at ELIH.org/gala or call 477-5164

A summer family favorite — Southold Historical Society’s Ice Cream Social — is set for Saturday, Aug. 2, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Maple Lane museum complex across from the firehouse. The historical society will also host its first “North Fork Annual” juried art exhibition Aug. 9-23 in the Reichert Family Center’s Cosden-Price Gallery on Main Road. For more information on these events call 765-5500.

News from Southold Free Library: Hours have changed! The library will now open at 9:30 a.m. year round. Donald Garside’s whimsical artwork is on display through August. Each piece is titled and guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Rose Crabbe won the Friends raffle for Orient artist Fran Liburt’s seascape painting. The current prize is a “Get Caught Reading” package, including a canopy mesh chair, zippered tote bag and, of course, books! The drawing is Friday, Aug. 15. Chances are $1 each.

My next deadline is Aug. 3 by 8 p.m. Don’t get caught by the alternate week schedule; send me your dates now. I’ll keep them on file.

No matter the weather, I challenge you to put your face to the sky, take a deep breath and smile, just because you can. Guaranteed to make you feel even a little bit better.
