Cops: Selden man arrested for fleeing police, nine other charges

A Selden man is facing 10 charges, including aggravated unlicensed driving and fleeing a police officer, after he tried to elude officers while he was on a dirt bike in Mattituck Saturday, police said.

Nigel Ortiz, 21, was heading south on Bay Avenue without a helmet at 11:14 a.m. when he was spotted by police, officials said.

Mr. Ortiz briefly turned back to look at the cruiser attempting to pull him over before riding his dirt bike onto the sidewalk and heading down Bartley Road away from officers, police said.

He was later found hiding in woods and was charged with fleeing police and nine other traffic violations, police said. He was later released on $500 bail, police said.

Mr. Ortiz was in Southold Justice Court in May where he was charged with third-degree criminal possession of marijuana, a felony, according to a previous Suffolk Times report.
