One year after Perry Care Day Center closed its doors, plans are in the works to bring another childcare and nursery school to the same building that housed Perry.

Clinton Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church in Greenport is hoping to operate what’s listed in an application with the village as Clinton Memorial Day Care in the Third Street building, which is next to the church.

Perry Day Care Center, which had been the only village recognized daycare center, closed last August due to financial hardships.

The plan requires a variance from the ZBA before it can move forward. Although the application is for a for-profit daycare, once it is up and running, the organizers hope to become a non-profit daycare center, according to the application.

While non-profit childcare facilities are a permitted use, a exemption is needed to allow for a for-profit daycare center to operate, according to the ZBA. The lot size, which is less than an acre, is also smaller than village code allows for that type of operation, according to ZBA documents.

The daycare would offer extended hours, family fun nights, educational classes and scholarship opportunities, according to a proposal before the village zoning board of appeals. Hours would be from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and additional hours on weekends as needed, according to the application.

Church leaders could not be reached for additional information.

A public hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 17 at the Third Street fire station.
