Mattituck News: Free movie night Sept. 6 at H.S.

Whenever you pass a field of sunflowers, you’ll notice they’re always facing upwards toward the sun, appearing to be reaching for heaven. Their golden brilliance is said to be a symbol of spiritual faith, so it’s fitting that the flagpole at the high school is circled with sunflowers in remembrance of a bright, warm, beautiful soul: Kaitlyn Doorhy. May God give the Doorhys the strength to endure the pain of their loss and the knowledge that our community will wrap our arms around them as they grieve and remember their beloved daughter.

Congratulations to Mattituck artist Patricia Feiler, who recently won the first Thomas Currie-Bell Memorial Purchase Prize for her painting “S. S. Rendezvous and Race.” Bestowed by the Southold Historical Society, the award notes the best work in its juried North Fork Annual show. This is the first year of the exhibit, which ran Aug. 9-23 at the society’s Cosden-Price Gallery. Nearly 50 artworks were entered and about 20 were chosen for display.

Looking for a good way to spend time with family? The Mattituck wrestling program is sponsoring a free outdoor movie night Saturday, Sept. 6, at 7:30 p.m. on the fields behind the high school. The featured film, open to all who’d like to attend, is “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters” (PG).

The Salvittis were bursting with pride at a recent competition involving their oldest, Randy, who participated in the Tom Foley Bench Press and Deadlift Classic Aug. 2. Randy was recognized for achieving first place in his category. Good work!

Happy birthday wishes go out during the next two weeks to Barbara Smith, William Green, Mary Berdinka, Rose Ruland, Abby Gannon, Renee Kelly, Barbara Macleod and Jenny Stype.

Toasting their many years of marital bliss are Dan and Karen Letteriello, Dot and Joe Pfaff and Sandy and Rick Gannon.

School opens Wednesday, Sept. 3, and many local families could use assistance gathering the school supplies their children need to start the year off right. CAST is accepting donations of school supplies at all our local libraries; Hudson City Savings Bank in Greenport and Southold; Bridgehampton National Bank in Mattituck and Greenport; and Capital One Bank in Greenport and Southold. Help make a child’s school year successful.

Just a reminder: Students entering 7th grade are invited with their parents to an orientation on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at 7 p.m. The evening will give students a chance to be welcomed by the principal, Mr. Petretti, visit their classrooms and practice opening their lockers.

While your calendars are out, you might want to note that Back to School Nights are the following Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. for the junior high and Tuesday, Sept. 16, for the high school. Parental involvement is important for a student’s success and these Back to School Nights are a perfect opportunity to meet your child’s teachers and see what their days are like.
