Art Beat: A tribute to Howard Hovey in Cutchogue
• A tribute to the late Howard Hovey will be part of the 35th annual Douglas Moore Music Festival, which will be held Saturday, Aug. 9, on the Cutchogue Village Green. The Atlantic Wind Symphony will perform.
Mr. Hovey, a Riverhead band leader, musician and music teacher, was a founder of the Douglas Moore Festival in 1979. His connection with Mr. Moore was personal; he met the Cutchogue composer in 1929 and it was Mr. Moore who prompted him to move to Riverhead in 1934. Mr. Hovey played in a number of bands, including the Atlantic Wind Symphony.
Two of Mr. Moore’s compositions will be included in the Aug. 9 concert. Guests may picnic on the green beginning at 5:30 p.m.; the concert begins at 7:30. Admission is free; donations will be accepted.
• Southold Historical Society will host a painting and sculpture exhibit as part of its first-ever “North Fork Annual,” a juried art exhibition. The exhibit will be on view Aug. 9 to 23 in the society’s Cosden-Price Gallery in downtown Southold.
Twenty entries were selected to be displayed. The $500 Thomas Currie-Bell Memorial Purchase Prize will be awarded to the show’s best work. Historical society director Geoffrey Fleming and Sean Cleary, chief operating officer of Phillips Auction House in New York, are the jurors.
The prize is named for Thomas Currie-Bell (1873-1946), a Southold painter whose wife, Ann Hallock Currie-Bell, was the founder and first president of the historical society.
An opening reception will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8.
• An opening reception for ‘The Creative Process,’ East End Arts’ third annual national juried art competition and show, is set for Friday, Aug. 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Riverhead gallery. The show will run through Sept. 24.
Guest jurors are Gerald Peters, owner of Gerald Peters Gallery in New York and Santa Fe, N.M., and Peter Marcelle, director of Mr. Peters’ New York gallery and owner of the Peter Marcelle Project gallery in Southampton.
Forty-three two-dimensional works were chosen for inclusion from among 494 entries. Submissions came from all over the U.S. as well as the United Kingdom. The selected pieces can be seen at eastendarts.org.
The opening reception coincides with “JumpstART,” East End Arts’ evening of free public arts in downtown Riverhead.
• The reception date has changed for a contemporary Latin and Caribbean art exhibition at Art Sites Gallery in Riverhead. The reception will be held Saturday, Aug. 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. The show will continue through Sept. 7.
Work by Rani Carson of Riverhead is on view with that of artists Javier Nino, Ada Colorina and Edgar Martinez from the Genius of Paco gallery in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
