Cops: Greenport man caught peeking through woman’s window

A Greenport man was charged with criminal trespass after allegedly trying to peek into a woman’s window while she was sleeping early Friday morning, Southold Town police said.

James Lawrence, 37, allegedly used a stick from the outside to push back a curtain and look inside as a woman slept on the living room couch around 4 a.m. Friday in a Greenport home on Main Street, police said. The woman recognized Mr. Lawrence, who took off when the woman shouted at him, police said.

The woman wished to pursue charges and police eventually tracked down Mr. Lawrence and arrested him.

Mr. Lawrence was transported to police headquarters and held for arraignment on the misdemeanor charge.

In 2012, Mr. Lawrence was arrested on a similar charge, according to previous reports. In 2010 he was indicted on a felony charge of second-degree burglary and public lewdness after reportedly exposing himself to two girls, ages 11 and 15. He was accused of breaking into a Main Street, Greenport, residence, going to the window and exposing himself to the girls in a house across the street.
