David Gamberg was sworn-in as the new superintendent of schools Tuesday night in Greenport.

Mr. Gamberg will also continue to serve as Southold School District superintendent, splitting his time between the districts over the next two years. State officials believe the shared-superintendent agreement is a first for Long Island’s K-12 school districts.

“I have a very good feeling,” he said after being on the job for the past couple of weeks. “It feels right. I feel like this is something that can be done. It’s going to depend very highly on both staffs and Boards of Education to work together.”

Mr. Gamberg added that he appreciates how the Greenport community has entrusted him with the position and said he has enjoyed meeting residents and local business owners.

“I’m not trying to smash them together,” he said, referring to school consolidation concerns. “I’m very respectful of that. I think, at the same time, I can observe from my perch and see what works well in each district and try to share that, like a bee would pollinate different plants.”

Mr. Gamberg has replaced Michael Comanda, who retired last month and currently serves as superintendent for the one-school New Suffolk district.
