Update 7:15 a.m.: Southold Town police say the driver of a pickup truck that crashed into a gas pump in Mattituck late Thursday told officers that he had fallen asleep just before the crash, according to a police report.

Police said the 55-year-old driver was headed west on Route 25 in Mattituck when it crossed into the eastbound lane, left the road and smashed into a gas pump at the Empire Gas station about 11:25 p.m.

The crash managed to knock the gas station from its base, causing the canopy to fall onto the truck as well as a “minor gasoline leak,” according to the report; however, an emergency shutoff valve prevented the pump from spilling more gas, police said.

Southold Town Police and Mattituck Fire Department officials were on the scene shortly after the crash occurred. The driver was treated by Mattituck Rescue Squad and taken to Eastern Long Island Hospital for further treatment of minor injuries, police said.

No arrests were reported by police.
