It’s not often that on the way home from a Southold Town Board meeting a crowd of town officials gathers on the deck of a ferry boat to watch as a nuclear submarine passes by.
Then again, the town only meets on Fishers Island once each year.
Wednesday marked that annual meeting as the Town Board, trustees, assessors and department heads made their way to the island to meet with residents. While a Town Board meeting is held on the island — and Wednesday’s meeting dealt with the important issue of zoning to allow for affordable housing on the island — much of the day centers on an opportunity for other town workers to meet with their most distant constituents. It’s a Town Hall on wheels, or rather water.
Check back for stories on the affordable housing issue and also for coverage of a study that has some Fishers Island residents mustering support to create an incorporated village there. For now, here’s a few photographs from the trip.
