Greenport News: Still time to donate school supplies

I’d be melancholy that it’s now September but somehow the fact that my family will all be together at the end of the month to celebrate the marriage of our son, Jeff, to Lori Petroski makes me look forward to fall’s arrival. There’s a silver lining in every cloud and that’s mine for this month.

It’s not too late to help a local child in need by purchasing a few school supplies and depositing them in one of the collection boxes throughout our community. Backpacks, lunchboxes/bags, pencils, pens, crayons, colored pencils, markers, scissors, glue sticks, notebooks (spiral and composition), folders, looseleaf and graph paper, binders, erasers, highlighters, index cards, rulers, calculators and combination locks are among the items needed.

As I do each year, I’d like to welcome those who are new to the school district. Robert Feeney is stepping up to act as interim secondary principal. Jen Skuggevik returns as a pre-K teacher and will be joined by Heather Petretti, who will be teach the other pre-K class. Welcome aboard; you’re going to see, first-hand, what great kids we have at Greenport Schools! I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that two long-standing members of the GHS family – Mike Connolly and Ron McEvoy – will be sorely missed when the school year starts.

Summer, as we know it, may be over, but there are still a few barbecues on the calendar. The GHS Student Council will hold theirs at the school on Tuesday, Sept. 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. and the senior class will hold one on Back-to School Night, Wednesday, Sept. 27, beginning at 4:30 p.m. Both will take place at the barbecue pit near the tennis courts.

With the N.Y. Giants being 4-0 in pre-season play, I’ve got to say I’m pretty excited about the start of the regular season this coming weekend. Locally, football starts Friday, Sept. 12, when your hometown favorites – the Porters – take to the field to host Babylon. Game time is 7 p.m.

St. Agnes Faith Formation classes resume Tuesday, Sept. 30, from 3 to 4:15 p.m. for levels 1-5 and Wednesday Oct. 1, from 6:45-8 p.m. for levels 6-8. Be sure to register your children in advance. Forms are on the parish website or in the front foyer of St. Agnes Church.

No column of mine would be complete with birthdays, so let me get busy with them. Danielle Golden and Carolyn Byrnes Macchirole celebrate Sept. 4; Jason Parker, Jason Burden, Bob Wallace and Joe Cherepowich on the 5th; Warren Bondarchuk Jr., Deanna Yoskovich, Dale Corwin DeCastro, Mary Speed, Mary Hewitt, Dot Wiggins, Kim Corazzini and Gabriella Garren on the 6th; Patty Hooks and Andrea Volinski on the 7th; Nicholas Bondarchuk, Colleen Heaney, Melissa Kondak, Bill Wiggins, Warren Mitchell and Ashley Biggs on the 8th; Vinnie Claps, my cousin Mike Heaney, Janna Cisterino, Rachel Ferretti Johnson and Anne Terry Swick on the 10th; Chris Czartosieski, Darryl Volinski and T.J. Jenkins on the 11th; Maleik Yoskovich and Kathy Glew Mayo on the 12th; and Tevin Parrish, Jason Campbell and Pete Checklick on the 13th.

The lone anniversary couple is Kim and Perry Corazzini, who will celebrate 26 years of wedded bliss Sept. 10.
