Ercole F. Schiavoni

Lifelong Greenport resident Ercole F. Schiavoni died Sept. 20. He was 95. 

Mr. Schiavoni was born July 17, 1919 in Greenport to Vincenza (Rozzi) and Julius Schiavoni. He married Helen in Greenport in November, 1958.

He joined the U.S. Army before graduating high school and served four years in the World War II Air Corps. In 2002, Mr. Schiavoni received his high school diploma as part of the N.Y. State  “Operation Recognition” program, which issues diplomas to those who left school early for wartime military service.

Mr. Schiavoni was retired from groundskeeping and maintenance work and had been a member of Greenport Fire Department and a past president of the Exempt Fireman’s Association.

He was predeceased by his wife in 1989; his brothers Salvatori and Dominick; his sisters Katherine Pirillo, Philomena Dunn and Josephine Michaels; and his nephew Rich Schiavoni. Mr. Schiavoni is survived by his sister Margaret Coutts; his brother Americo Schiavoni; his nieces and nephews, Virginia (John) Smith, Jimmy (Cynthia) Pirillo, Walter Coutts, Eddy (Linda) Schiavoni, Beverly Tricomi, Shelia Dunn, Sharon (Ed) O’Neill, Linda (Bill) La Barr, Mickey (Marilyn) Dunn, Pamela Dunn, Stephan (Peggy) Michaels; and Karen (Bill) Johnson.

The family will receive visitors Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Horton-Mathie in Greenport. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 10 a.m. at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport. Interment will take place at the church cemetery.
