A spirited contest between two improved high school girls soccer teams brought what could be considered a just result. It could be said that neither Bishop McGann-Mercy or Southold/Greenport deserved to lose in their Suffolk County League VII game on Tuesday, and neither team did, thanks to Siobhan Merrill.

Merrill, a sophomore center midfielder, rescued McGann-Mercy from what would have been its first loss of the season by scoring the tying goal with 4 minutes 10 seconds left in the second overtime period of a 3-3 draw at Southold High School.

It was just 1:59 earlier when Megan Van Bourgondien launched a beautiful shot that found the left side of the net for her second goal of the game, giving Southold/Greenport its first lead at 3-2.

McGann-Mercy (3-0-1, 2-0-1), which has outscored its opponents by 22-5, took one-goal leads in the first half on goals by Abby Coniglio (assisted by Olivia Kneski) and Meghan Bossone. Sandwiched between them was Jillian Golden’s third goal of the season for Southold/Greenport (0-2-1, 0-1-1). Annie Lincoln was credited with the assist.

Van Bourgondien, a senior center midfielder, evened things at 2-2 at 64:14. With a little over seven minutes remaining in the second half, she nearly added another goal, sending a long-range shot off the right goal post.

Madeleine Joinnides came within inches of winning it for McGann-Mercy, tagging a shot off the underside of the crossbar with 52 seconds to go in the second half.

Southold/Greenport lost one of its players to injury. In the 58th minute, Ajsia Martocchia went down with what was later described as a hip injury. She was carried off the field on the back of teammate Isabelle Simon and was in obvious pain. Coach Vaughn Locascio said he didn’t know the extent of the injury.
