SHARKS 5, TUCKERS 2

The Mattituck High School girls tennis team finally met its match, and the Tuckers had to go outside of their league to do so.

Wins in three-setters at third and fourth singles by juniors Nicole Horn and Olivia Mann sent Eastport/South Manor on to a 5-2 non-league win over the Tuckers in Manorville on Monday. It was the first loss of the season for the Tuckers (6-1, 6-0 Suffolk County League VIII).

Horn bounced back from a 6-1 loss in the first set to take the next two sets against Julie Krudop, 7-5, 6-1. Mann defeated Drew Hahn, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Eastport/South Manor (5-3, 3-3 League VII) received a point from its first singles player, Jackie Bukzin. Bukzin, who took second place in the county tournament last year and competed in the state tournament, faced Liz Dwyer in an all-freshmen contest. Bukzin (8-0) maintained her unblemished record by handing Dwyer (6-1) her first loss of the season, 6-0, 6-0.

Bukzin, a steady player with a powerful passing shot, put away 20 winners and used a 73 first-serve percentage to help outpoint Dwyer, 48-15.

Three of Mattituck’s top four singles players are freshmen, including Emily Mowdy. She was a 6-3, 6-0 winner over Alexa Sparac at second singles.

Mattituck’s other team point came from the first doubles pairing of juniors Anna Kowalski and Courtney Penny. They topped Victoria Chan and Cassie Rivera, 6-4, 6-4.

The other two doubles matches went the Sharks’ way. Cailey McKenna and Cara Piotroski teamed up for a 6-0, 6-3 defeat of Ava Gains and Kimberly Scheer while Julia Cutler and Taylor Bourguignon beat Emily Gatz and Jacey Lengyel, 6-0, 6-0.
