Greenport’s Third Street basketball court is not only receiving a new look, but a new name as well.

To honor four deceased residents who lost their lives at early ages, Trustee David Murray suggested renaming the park the “Third Street Memorial Basketball Court” when upgrades to the facilities are completed next month.

The park would honor residents Corey Freeman, Michael Brown, Kyle Rose and Jefferson “Naquawn” Treadwel, who died in separate accidents and shared a love for the park.

“I think a lot of villagers have been waiting for this,” Mr. Murray said.

At the urging of Mr. Murray in April, village crews began working on the deteriorating playgrounds and basketball courts around Greenport. The projects included resurfacing the basketball courts on both Third and Fifth streets. The Third Street work will be recognized with an October ribbon-cutting ceremony.
