Mattituck News: Car show coming to Veterans Park Sunday

September is in full swing and you can tell school is in session by the hustle and bustle all around town. Despite how busy you are, take a moment today to remember those who lost their lives on 9/11 and salute and  honor those who responded to the events of that fateful day. United we stand tall!

The Mattituck Fire Department invites you to Veterans Park on Sunday, Sept. 14, for a car show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sounds like a nice way to spend the afternoon.

Seventh- and eighth-graders are participating in a Pampered Chef fundraiser to help offset the cost of the eighth-grade trip to Washington, D.C. They’ll also be selling magazines and poinsettias later in the year to help this effort. For many, this will the first — sometimes the only — time they’ll get to our nation’s capital and these fundraisers have been very helpful in the past. If you aren’t in touch with a junior high student, feel free to call me at 298-8471, ext. 3269, and I’ll facilitate your purchase.

The junior class is also fundraising this month by selling mums to help pay the cost of the prom. Mums are available in two sizes and three colors and will be delivered to the school Monday, Sept. 29. Place your orders by Sept. 24. Contact Andrea Donals at the school with any questions.

A very special belated birthday wish to Helmut Mandl of Laurel, who turned 92 Sept. 5. He celebrated surrounded by family and friends at a barbecue in his honor. Belated birthday wishes also go to Greg Maddaloni, who blew out his candles Sept. 9.

Birthdays are also coming up for Lexington Horton, Louis Troisi, Kim Ulmet, Cissy Scaramucci, Taylor Gildersleeve, Kristy Palmer, Travis Keller, Teagan Nine, Mally Fogarty, Jake Sisson, Bobby Hough, Cara Slotkin, Angela Sidlauskas, Glen Hamilton, Kathy Best, Jason Wesnofske and Sharon Brooks.

Special birthday wishes to Kimberly Scheer, who turns Sweet 16 on the 15th; Marissa Russo, who turns 21 on the 23rd surrounded by her friends at Marist; and my daughter, Vanessa, who celebrates in Boston with friends and colleagues on the 12th.

Pets are part of the family for many of us. The Blessing of the Animals will take place Sunday, Oct. 5, at 1:30 p.m. on the lawn of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Mattituck. If you’d like to have your pet blessed, contact Nancy Deegan at 298-8304 or [email protected] to register. All kinds of pets are welcome.

Happy anniversary to two couples who are toasting their years together: David and Suzanne Martinez and Patty and Billy Young.

The Mattituck-Laurel Historical Society will hold a special fundraiser Wednesday, Oct. 8, from noon to 8 p.m. at Soundview restaurant on Route 48, Greenport. Come and enjoy a complete, delicious chicken, fish or vegetarian dinner for $25, including all gratuities. Eat in and enjoy the beautiful view or take out. Proceeds will support major repair projects for the society’s museum buildings. For more info, contact Lauren at 298-8431.
