The Greenport/Southold Clippers had a surprise in store for their former girls volleyball coach, Sue Kostal. When Kostal, now an assistant coach for Pierson/Bridgehampton, returned to the Greenport High School gym on Tuesday for the first time since she coached the Clippers last year, her former players dogpiled her.

It was a sign of affection for Kostal, but hospitality goes only so far. Once the Suffolk County League VIII match began, the Clippers were all business. They turned in a consistent, smooth performance to secure a playoff-clinching win, 25-14, 25-14, 25-18.

Mercedes Edwards had 10 assists and went 16 of 16 from the service line with 3 aces for the second-place Clippers (6-3, 6-1). Jenna Standish had 5 kills, 3 aces, 2 dinks and 1 assist.

The Whalers (2-7, 2-5) managed to string together 3 straight points only twice. The only leads they held were at 2-1 in the first game and 1-0 in the third game.

The Clippers did well with their serve receive, conceding only 2 aces.

Maizy Guyer had 7 assists for Pierson/Bridgehampton.
