Preview: Oysterponds set to rehire teacher, approve contract

The Oysterponds school board will vote Tuesday night to rehire a teacher and former board member who was previously laid off in 2013, according to a meeting agenda.

The agenda includes a resolution to hire Kathy Syron as a full-time teacher assistant with a $28,000 prorated salary. Ms. Syron was one of three employees laid off in 2013, according to a previous article in The Suffolk Times.

Ms. Syron, who served one term on the Oysterponds Board of Education from 2008 to 2011, had requested medical leave in May 2013 while serving as a pre-kindergarten teacher. She had been laid off due to reductions in staff, said superintendent Richard Malone.

The board is also set to vote to approve a agreement to add to the contract between the district and the Oysterponds Faculty Association, the agenda states. Details on that agreement were not immediately available.

The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the school on Main Road in Orient.

Clarification: A sentence in this preview has been reworded, as it appeared to suggest that Ms. Syron was fired due to taking medical leave. It has been clarified to state that the two events were unrelated.
