Mattituck News: Annual Halloween parade set for Oct. 31

Attention all goblins, princesses, ghosts and creepy creatures: Come to the annual Halloween parade, Friday, Oct. 31, sponsored by the Mattituck Lions Club and Mattituck Fire Department. The parade begins at the firehouse at 6 p.m. and proceeds to the high school. Come see some of our youngest trick-or-treaters celebrate the season. 

If you’re looking for family fun before Halloween, why not join a scavenger hunt? The Southold Mothers’ Club, Group for the East End, Lyrical Children and Macaroni Kid have teamed up to sponsor a Family Nature Scavenger Hunt on Saturday, Oct. 25, at Downs Farm Preserve. Help spread the word about this fantastic event. There will be various levels of scavenger hunts appropriate for children up to age 12.

Fairy tales do come true. That was proven last week when Christopher Papadopoulos, a bouquet of roses in hand, proposed to the love of his life, Elena Abrahchayeva. The happy couple met while attending medical school and are currently working arduous yet rewarding hours completing residencies in New York City. Best wishes as you begin your happily ever after.

Another local couple who got engaged a few weeks ago are school sweethearts Bill Zuhoski and Stephanie Sweeney. When I asked Bill recently about his wedding plans, it was clear by the look on his face and the smile from ear to ear how very happy he is to be planning his special day with his perfect match. Congratulations!

God bless the newest member of the Carroll family. Laura and Tom Carroll welcomed their firstborn, William Thomas, at 12:10 a.m. Oct. 20, weighing 7 pounds, 15 ounces. Special congratulations to Billy and Patty Young on their first grandchild!

The North Fork Community Theatre’s currently production of “The Boy Friend” features the Suffolk Times’ own Lauren Sisson in the role of Madame Dubonnet. Visit for tickets and show timetables to see a performance by Lauren and the rest of the cast.

Mattituck High School senior Oliver Orr has been named a commended student in the 2015 National Merit Scholarships Program. According to a program spokesperson, students who achieve this honor “have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success.” Congratulations, Oliver. You make Mattituck proud!

The MCTA is getting ready to host its ninth annual Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning. If you’d like to participate, you can register at Proceeds from the race will go to a Sloan Kettering senior scholarship in honor of  Kaitlyn Doorhy and the MCTA Senior Scholarship fund (to be awarded June 2015 ).

Birthdays will end October and kick off November for Megan Collins, Joe Pfaff, Corrine Araneo, Casey Binkowski, Laura Carroll, Clayton and Kyle Santillo, Emily Talbot, Kyle Pumillo, Sarah Strickland, Caty Austin and Meghan Ross.
