Shirley E. Asher

Longtime New Suffolk resident Shirley E. Asher died Oct. 22. She was 89. 

She was born in Queens Dec. 20, 1924, to John and Edith (Smith) Heffernan.

Formerly of Baldwin, Ms Asher moved to New Suffolk in 1960. For 50 years, she worked for Baxter Bros. in Mattituck, retiring as office manager.

She was a member and secretary of the Cutchogue Presbyterian Church and the secretary for the Cutchogue Cemetery Association.

Predeceased by her husband John Asher, Feb. 8, 1997, she is survived by her daughters, Noreen Berstein of Virginia and Linda Hill of Coram; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The family received visitors Oct. 25 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck where funeral services were conducted by her son-in-law, the Rev. Richard O. Hill of Hope Lutheran Church in Selden. Interment took place Oct. 26 at the Cutchogue Cemetery.
