William McDermott

William McDermott of Laurel died Oct. 3, 2014. He was 65.

He was born in Astoria, Queens, on Nov. 6, 1948, to Peter and Loretta McDermott and was a graduate of Southold High School.

During the Vietnam War, he served honorably with the United States Army.

For 34 years, he worked for the County of Suffolk in the Department of Public Works and the police department.

Bill served on the Southold Town Conservation Advisory Council and was a member of the NRA.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy (née Campbell), who he married Jan. 7, 1995; two children, Marci McDermott and Ryan McDermott; and two grandchildren, Ella Wirth and Ava McDermott. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Butch Herbert and Tracy Elmore; and his step-grandchildren, Ben Herbert, Kaitlin Elmore, Ariel Elmore and Gage Elmore. He was predeceased by his brother, Thomas McDermott.

The family received friends Oct. 6 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. Funeral services were led by Father Peter Garry. Interment with U.S. Army honors took place at Calverton National Cemetery Oct. 7.
