Virginia Suter
Longtime Cutchogue resident Virginia Wood Suter died Dec. 18 at the age of 95.
Virginia was born Sept. 26, 1919, in Queens to Raymond Wood and Mary (Markham) Wood. She graduated from Jamaica High School where she proudly earned the Roosevelt Medal for Service.
Virginia worked in advertising in New York City after graduation from Adelphi University. In 1946, she married Paul Suter and they raised their four children in Paramus, N.J. and Cutchogue.
Virginia was a substitute teacher in New Jersey and her love of gardening led to many years as a garden club member. She was a trustee of Cutchogue New Suffolk Library and was honored to be part of the building of the addition.
Virginia was a parishioner of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, a volunteer with North Fork Parish Outreach and was a member of Beachwood Colony in Cutchogue for over 55 years.
She was a golfer, a sailor and a member of North Fork Country Club, Old Cove Yacht Club and Eastern Sailing Club. Virginia and her husband Paul explored the East End by boat and raced various sailboats to great success. It began when Virginia crewed for Paul in his Comet before they were married. They shared their love of the water with their family.
Predeceased by her husband, Paul in 2009, Virginia is survived by her four loving children; her daughter, Anne Suter (John) Zimmer of Oakton, Va. and Cutchogue; her son Donald W. (Irene) Suter of Englewood, Fla. and Cutchogue; her son Lawrence P. Suter of Coral Gables, Fla. and Laurel; her son Richard M. (Bobette) Suter of Quogue and Cutchogue; and her sister, Joan Wood. Virginia is also survived by her seven grandchildren, Alix Suter, Allison Suter (Stephen) Lovelace, Andrew Zimmer, Christopher (Stephanie) Suter , Jay (Brittany) Zimmer, Jonathan (Tara) Suter, and Richard (Iliana) Zimmer; and her six great-grandchildren, Jackson and Tucker Suter, Mason Suter, Taylor and Annabelle Lovelace, and Carolina Zimmer.
The Liturgy of Christian Burial was held Dec. 20 at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Mattituck. Interment took place at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.
Memorial donations may be made to the Cutchogue New Suffolk Library.
Arrangements were entrusted to Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue.
