No. 4 Sports Story of the Year: Golden age of Tuckers wrestling

What is one to say about the 2013-14 season turned in by the Mattituck/Greenport high school wrestling team? Tremendous? Inspiring? Staggering?

Try all of the above.

The Tuckers (18-3) were a dominant force, winning their second consecutive Section XI Division II championship after never having won a county title before. They posted an undefeated league record for the second straight season, winning back-to-back league crowns for the first time in team history. Their previous league titles were in 1984, 1995 and 2003. They entered the current season with a string of 16 consecutive wins over two seasons.

A team-record seven Tuckers had their arms raised as county champions and competed in the state tournament: Jack Bokina (99 pounds), Brian Pelan (132), Bobby Becker (138), James Hoeg (145), Christian Angelson (170), Sal Loverde (182) and Adam Goode (195). Becker was presented with the county tournament’s Champion of Champions trophy.

Twin brothers Luke and Jack Bokina both earned middle school all-American status as eighth-graders by virtue of their performances in the National High School Coaches Association Wrestling Championships. Luke took second place in the middle school tournament at 85 pounds while Jack finished fifth at 90.

It was a memorable season. Said coach Cory Dolson, “These kids are never going to forget this — ever.”
