Boys Basketball: Tuckers run away to win in Hampton Bays

Coming off two games in which his Mattituck High School boys basketball team did not play to the level that he would have liked, coach Paul Ellwood heard concern in the voice of his assistant coach, Kevin Chartrand, when the Tuckers fell behind, 6-0, to Hampton Bays on Friday night.
Ellwood, on the other hand, liked what he was seeing.
The pace was fast, both ways, and the Tuckers like to run, so they ran away with a 69-31 win at Hampton Bays High School.
A 13-2 run in the first quarter sent the Tuckers (7-2, 3-2 Suffolk County League VII) off and running.
The undoubted highlight of the game was Ryan Mowdy’s electrifying, two-handed dunk off a pass from Joe Tardif 3 minutes 23 seconds into the second quarter. It was part of a paralyzing 22-4 run that gave the Tuckers a 42-16 advantage.
Hampton Bays started the second half in a 1-for-14 shooting funk, and Mattituck took advantage, expanding its lead to as many as 43 points when Jon Dwyer nailed a 3-point shot for a 67-24 lead.
Mattituck shot nearly twice more accurately than the Baymen (3-6, 1-4), 40.8 percent from the field to 23.9 percent. The Tuckers also won the battle of the boards, 48-36.
Will Gildersleeve was the top scorer with 17 points for Mattituck. Chris Dwyer was a force with a double-double effort, 11 points and 10 rebounds. Parker Tuthill added 9 points and Tardif had 8 assists.
The leading scorer for Hampton Bays was Shane Courtenay with 8 points. Dan Aube was an inside presence for the Baymen. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Aube scored only 2 points, but pulled down 14 rebounds and blocked a pair of shots.
