The Southold School Educational Foundation has been raising money with the help of teachers and students to expand on the high school’s fledgling television and film program. As of Tuesday, $2,805 had been raised through a campaign launched in November on gofundme.com, an online donation system. Now, thanks to a $4,000 donation from Peconic Landing last week, the foundation is nearly halfway to its $15,000 goal.

Superintendent David Gamberg said the money will be used to purchase new computers for film editing as well as digital cameras, lighting and audio equipment.

“We’re now in the digital age and media is now in many career pathways,” Mr. Gamberg said.

Both Mr. Gamberg and Peconic Landing president and CEO Robert Syron said they hope to extend the program’s benefits beyond the students themselves. One idea would be to have students interview Peconic Landing residents to record their oral histories through the school’s new film program.

“There’s a real need to capture the stories of the lives that they live,” Mr. Gamberg said.

Once the fundraising goal is reached and the communications center is fully operational, Southold plans to open its program to secondary students from the nearby Greenport and Shelter Island school districts.
