Police: Quad driver nearly causes accident on Route 48, flees cop
A 23-year-old Cutchogue man driving a quad nearly caused a tractor trailer accident Friday morning, then fled from police across a farm field and ran into the woods, according to a Southold Town police news release.
The man was tracked by police in the snow and arrested on misdemeanor charges, cops said.
According to the release, Erick Secaida crossed Route 48 from the south near Bridge Lane “right in front” of a tractor trailer, nearly causing an accident. The tractor trailer slammed on the brakes, police said, but did not crash.
Mr. Secaida then refused to stop for police and drove into a farm field with a police officer in close pursuit, police said. The driver got off the quad and ran through a wooded area on foot, where he was ultimately caught.
Mr. Secaida was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation, reckless endangerment, and violations for an unregistered vehicle and driving without insurance, according to the news release. He was released from police headquarters on bail, police said.
