Happy New Year 2015. Wow, it doesn’t seem possible. A new year means different things to different people. It can be a resolution to change something in your life. It can be a time of reflection on the past year. It can simply be a party. Whatever its reason or meaning for you, I hope you find happiness and peace.

The Southold NJROTC Air Rifle Team recently hosted its first “shoulder-to-shoulder” competition, in which cadets stand beside competitors from the other team. Team captain Julie Dickerson rose to the occasion with a high score of 223 and was the only cadet to break the 200 mark! The winning team also included cadets TJ Behr, Evelyn Cummings, Owen Klipstein, Jonna Franke and Will Blasko. Special kudos to the match’s top three shooters: Julie Dickerson, first;TJ Behr, second; and Evelyn Cummings, third. Evelyn, a first-time shooter, received the highest overall score! Next up is a competition in Linden, N.J., on Jan. 19.

I renew my New Year’s challenge to all our readers: Live outside your box. Reach out a lending hand. Offer help. Get involved. You might be surprised how enriching it can be to your life, as well as to the people you get involved with.

The due date for my next column is Jan. 25 — no later than noon, please. This is a place for you to share your news. Let us be your cheering section and spread your good news. Have a wonderful couple of weeks.
