Mattituck News: Harlem Wizards are North Fork bound March 3

Despite the frigid weather, our calendars will be filled with events over the next few weeks. From basketball to fashion to arming ourselves against some of the challenges of technology, there are many dates and activities to make note of.

Our children use technology for everything, so it’s important for parents to understand the obstacles and pitfalls of social media that their kids are exposed to. On Wednesday, Feb. 25, students in grades 7 to 12 will hear about these challenges from Det. Rory Forrestal of the Suffolk County Computer Crimes Unit during assemblies throughout the day. On the same day, parents and family members are invited to come to the auditorium at 7 p.m. and learn what many children are already aware of. Social media can be a problem if we do not know how to keep our children safe.

On a lighter note, getting the family together for some fun is on the calendar when the Harlem Wizards visit MHS March 3. The Mattituck Athletic Booster Club is sponsoring this event. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. and the game begins promptly at 7. Tickets are $10 per student and $12 for general admission and can be purchased at the Love Lane Sweet Shoppe. Tickets will also be sold at the door for $12 per student and $15 general admission.

This year’s PTSA Fashion Show will be held Thursday, March 26. Tickets are $50; they’ll be on sale March 10 and 11 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the lobby in front of the high school gym. This event sells out quickly so get your friends together and purchase a table to enjoy the evening and support our PTSA.

The students traveling to Spain this year recently held a raffle for a Michael Kors bag and Lancôme cosmetics. The winner was Samantha Smilovich. Congratulations.

Congratulations also go to eighth-grader Kaitlyn Driscoll, who received the “Award of Excellence” at the Parrish Art Museum’s 2015 student art exhibit.

It’s always a happy morning at MHS when a “Breakfast of Champions” is held to recognize the students of the month. January’s winners were Christopher Nicholson, Ali Kilinc, Dorothy Condon, Dan Fedun, Emmet Ryan, Joy Davis, Alex Mauterelli and Willie Burns.

Candles will be lit on many birthday cakes during the next two weeks. Happy birthday to Rebecca McDonald, Chris Burns, Carolyn McDonald, Christine Shanahan, Virginia Motto, John Bradley, Greg Olsen, Daniel Leaden, Barbara Jean Smith, Alexandra Zaweski, Matt Brisotti, James Finora and Pat Mudd.

The days are getting longer and soon you’ll be able to see the spring plants pushing through the snow and ice. Hang in there. Spring is almost here!
