Man accused of raping teen held on $50K cash bail
A 22-year-old Greenport man is being held on $50,000 cash bail after answering to two felony charges Monday for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl on two separate occasions in December.
Jaime Contra-Quiroa was arrested Sunday at his Washington Avenue home on two counts of second-degree rape, each a Class D felony, Southold Town police said. Investigators said that on Dec. 9 and Dec. 24, Mr. Contra-Quiroa had sex with a 13-year-old he shared a house with.
According to New York State Penal Code, someone is guilty of rape in the second degree when a person 18 years or older engages in sexual intercourse with another person less than 15 years old.
Southold Town Justice Bill Price said at the man’s arraignment Monday that Mr. Contra-Quiroa was living with his girlfriend and the teenager at the time of the alleged incidents.
Police do not believe the victim and suspect are relatives, police Chief Martin Flatley said in an email Monday.
Without a lawyer present, Mr. Contra-Quiroa told Judge Price he is an illegal immigrant from Guatemala and has been working in Greenport as a carpenter.
Judge Price set bail at $50,000 cash and $100,000 bond. Mr. Contra-Quiroa was not able to post that amount. He is due back in court Friday, however Judge Price said it is likely this case would be decided in county court.
“This matter will be presented to the Suffolk County Grand Jury,” Judge Price said.
Since Mr. Contra-Quiroa is not a legal resident of the U.S., there is also a chance he could be deported, Judge Price said.
