Wilfred J. Becklein

Longtime Southold resident Wilfred J. Becklein died Feb. 25 at Stony Brook University Medical Center. He was 96.

Mr. Becklein was born Dec. 4, 1918, in Brooklyn to Mary (Link) and Frederick Becklein.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946 and was awarded a Purple Heart medal. He was a member of Southold American Legion Post 803 and Mattituck Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Becklein had retired from working as a manufacturing supervisor for Nieman Brothers. Family members said he enjoyed surf fishing and woodworking.

Predeceased by his wife, Lillian “Lilly” in 1972, Mr. Becklein is survived by his son, Robert, of Daytona, Fla.; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The family received visitors March 2 at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue. A funeral service took place March 3 at the funeral home, officiated by the Rev. Garret Johnson. Interment took place at Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale.
