Health Beat: Blood, eyeglass drive in Mattituck
• The Mattituck Fire Department and Mattituck Lions Club will jointly sponsor a blood and eyeglass drive at the Pike Street firehouse Saturday, March 14, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Those between 16 (with parental permission) and 76 who weigh at least 110 pounds and have not received a tattoo in the last 12 months are eligible to donate blood. • A support group for caregivers who look after the elderly or chronically ill will meet Tuesday, March 17, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Southold Town Senior Center on Pacific Street in Mattituck. Call 298-4460 for information.
• Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead has announced the addition of Jenny Cabas-Vargas, M.D., to its orthopedics team. A specialist in arthritis and autoimmune conditions, Dr. Cabas-Vargas will serve the hospital as director of rheumatology and immunology.
• San Simeon by the Sound in Greenport has named C.N.A. Susan Stabile, a 10-year member of its recreation and nursing team, as employee of the month for March. In a release, co-workers said Ms. Stabile’s “bubbly and effervescent personality is integral to her role at San Simeon.” In describing her job responsibilities, Ms. Stabile said, “I try every day to brighten someone’s life.”
• Peconic Landing in Greenport has named Vincent Tirelli as its March employee of the month. In a release, director of environmental services Darryl Volinski said he has shown “leadership and commitment” and “goes above and beyond for Peconic Landing and our residents.”
Mr. Tirelli has “taken the lead during emergency situations,” Mr. Volinski said, and “exemplifies honesty and fairness with his staff as well as his peers.”
• The 23rd annual Eastern Long Island Hospital Golf Classic, honoring the life and legacy of the late John Romanelli, will take place Wednesday, May 15, at Gardiner’s Bay Country Club on Shelter Island. The event, which benefits the ELIH emergency department, features 18 holes of golf (with tee times at 8:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m.), hole-in-one prizes, a barbecue lunch, grab-and-go sandwiches at halfway, cocktails, dinner and an awards ceremony.
