Deputy Mayor: Energy company may want back into Greenport

A Garden City energy company that installed a generator in Greenport a decade ago may be interested in building a new project in the village, according to Deputy Mayor George Hubbard Jr.

Speaking during a Village Board work session, Mr. Hubbard said he had recently met with Bob Foxen, the CEO of energy company Global Common, over the Scavenger power plant property. The company is eying about 4 acres of the currently unused land.

A new project would be a return to Greenport. In 2002, Mr. Foxen’s company helped build a peaker plant in Greenport, designed to handle loads during heavy use periods. The plant was finished in 2003.

The company also proposed installing plants across the East End, including in Greenport, in order to apply for a Long Island Power Authority/PSEG request for proposals. That plan was nixed last year after a “cool reception” from the Southampton Town Board, according to an article in the Riverhead News-Review.

Mr. Hubbard said the company had no direct plans yet, but was exploring its options in the village.

“They want to see that they still have a friend in Greenport,” he said. A sit-down between Mr. Foxen and the board is being scheduled for its April meeting.
